Animal survival is a fascinating and complex subject. As these photos show,nature usually plays tricks on us. Two insects are sitting on a flower. They both look like bees, but one of them isn't a real bee. It is imitating a bee in order to protect itself from possible predators.
The real bee on the left has a sting, which it uses as a weapon to attack its enemies. However, the hover fly on the right isn't dangerous.
It s completely harmless. This imitation of one species by another often happens in nature and is called mimicry. Animals copy the appearance,actions or sounds of another animal and this helps them to survive. -
